A forest in Presque Isle County does not carry sound the way it should. It swallows footsteps, muffles speech, and then, without warning, plays your voice back from the wrong side of time. In 1978, researcher Dr. Alistair Finch comes to Michigan to study an "acoustic distortion zone," not a monster. His tapes disagree, and the woods begin answering him in his own voice.

Decades later, podcast host Leo Hagan is broke, burned out, and desperate for a story that can resurrect his fading show. He finds a post: a raw 911 call where a man claims a tall, wrong-legged thing is watching from the trees, then the call ends in bone-crunching silence and dragging through gravel. Leo downloads the file anyway.
