The Lanterns of Ban Rai

The Lanterns of Ban Rai is a folkloric nightmare set on the Mekong, where a village survives by treating the river as provider, witness, and judge. On the night of the annual lantern ceremony, the offerings do not drift downstream. They come back upstream, soaked in black water, packed with human teeth, and scrawled with names nobody has spoken in decades.

Pim, a young teacher chosen to lead the ceremony, wakes to a stain in the creases of her palms that will not wash away. A local writer, Chai, starts digging through records that look too clean, too edited. Pim's grandmother knows the rules, and the price of breaking them, but Ban Rai has spent years turning forgetting into a skill.

When the river's hunger takes shape, it does not want prayers. It wants a complete record. It wants witnesses. It wants the lie cut open in daylight. And it keeps coming until the village is forced to do the one thing it has refused for generations: say the names out loud, and name what was done.
