About the book
The story
At the dead crossroads of Grease Alley, four abandoned roadside restaurants still face inward like idols waiting for a cue: King's Feast, Jester's Jolly Burger, The Clucky Colonel's Coop, and The Golden Bull Steakhouse. Filmmaker Maya, cinematographer Leo Kade, sound man Ben, and on-camera host Chloe arrive expecting regional folklore, eerie production value, and an easy descent into American roadside decay. Instead they find a place that is not merely ruined. It is arranged. The mascots seem to shift positions. The neon word FEAST flickers to life after dark. And the old drive-thru speaker at King's Feast begins answering hunger like a living thing.
Morning does not make the place safer. Their food rots overnight in impossible ways. The van battery dies. Flies gather in deliberate swarms. A low hum rises from the buildings like electricity pushed through meat. Worse, Grease Alley does not only starve the body. It sharpens appetite, studies fear, and makes every smell feel like an invitation. As the crew keeps filming, they realize the crossroads is not haunted by what happened there in the past. It is still operating, still serving, and still waiting for people foolish enough to arrive hungry.
When the Paper Crowned Monarch and the Painted Jester reveal themselves as active parts of a larger feeding order, the documentary collapses into ritual survival. The Hollow Grins of Grease Alley is psychological folkloric horror about appetite, spectacle, and the terror of discovering that some abandoned places are not abandoned at all. They are simply waiting for the next customers to place an order.
