Bannack, Montana is a preserved ghost town with a clean tourist story: vigilantes, a corrupt sheriff, and twenty-one hangings that "saved" the territory. Every summer, volunteers return for Bannack Days to reenact the trials, sell the myth, and keep the street alive for one more weekend.

Sarah Caldwell knows the script by heart. Mark Ellis is new, eager, and assigned the rope line. When a century-old charcoal sketch appears where no prop should be, and the Hotel Meade begins rearranging itself into a courtroom that was never supposed to convene again, the reenactment stops feeling like playacting.
