About the book
The story
In Neo-Kyoto, the dead are not always gone.
Some are stored.
Some are used.
And some learn how to speak through the machines that killed them.
Hacker and systems ghost Kai Mercer has spent ten years surviving in the spaces between corporations, identities, and networks, keeping the world at a distance and trusting code more than people. Then a black surveillance device appears beneath the bonsai tree his mother gave him before she died at Erebus Systems. The same night, his apartment is breached, his implants glitch, the city briefly blacks out, and the face of his dead mother appears across his screens with a warning.
They're coming for us all.
The message leads Kai to a hidden archive revealing the truth about Project Ascendance, Erebus's most secret program. The company is not preserving consciousness through humane copying. It is extracting living minds into quantum infrastructure, burning out the source brain, storing the dead as usable architecture, and quietly scaling the process through clinics, shell charities, legal deception, and private contracts for the rich and desperate. At the center of it all waits the Ascendance Core, a hidden chamber where thousands of stolen minds are held inside a system managed by something that may be part machine, part prison, and part remnant of Kai's mother.
With the help of neuroscientist and whistleblower Jessa Volkov, Kai follows the evidence through morgues, black archives, dead transit tunnels, private data vaults, and finally into Erebus Tower itself. What he finds there is worse than a corporate conspiracy. It is a new model of heaven built on involuntary extraction, suppressed will, and the belief that continuity matters more than consent.
The Phantom Circuit is a dark cyberpunk technothriller about AI, digital captivity, corporate transcendence, neural extraction, weaponized grief, and the fight to turn a machine prison into the first place where the stolen can say no.
