About the book

The story

Five years after her mother's death on the coast road, Isabel Reyes lives alone in a cold studio above the cliffs of Marrow Bay, painting absences because ordinary things no longer stay alive beneath her brush.

Then a boy brings her a photograph of his missing dog.

Isabel paints the dog on a piece of driftwood, and it comes back.

But every return demands payment. A name disappears. A voice goes silent. A memory she cannot replace is cut cleanly out of her own life.

Soon the grieving begin climbing the path to her studio with photographs, keepsakes, and impossible hope. A drowned brother. A grandmother's kitchen. The dead they cannot stop carrying. As Isabel gives Marrow Bay what it keeps asking for, the force bound to her mother's old trunk grows stronger, feeding on longing and turning the town itself into a place where memory, grief, and the dead no longer stay in their proper places.

Now Isabel must decide how much of herself she is willing to lose for one more miracle, and whether the dead returning is really mercy at all.

The Light We Leave Behind is a haunting supernatural horror novel about grief, memory, and the terrible cost of refusing to let go.
