In Hallowell, the church bell does not ring on the night they bring the boy to the altar.

The town knows better.

For generations, the people of Hallowell have lived under an old arrangement buried beneath church stone, council records, and family blood. Children vanish, names are softened into ceremony, and frightened men call sacrifice preservation. Beneath it all, something ancient and hungry waits under the roots, the well, and the black spring beyond town.

When twelve-year-old Jonah Hale is chosen for the rite and escapes into the woods, the old pattern begins to break. At the same time, outsider Evelyn Cross uncovers the hidden records of Hallowell: journals, maps, bone registers, jars of remains, and the original account of Elias Hale, who warned that his own descendants might turn a desperate binding into doctrine.

What she finds is worse than folklore. The sacrifices were never stopping the thing below. They were feeding it.

As Jonah runs toward the first blood site in the west woods with Eliza Cartwright’s diary and the town’s oldest blade, Evelyn joins forces with clerk Martha Crane and Sheriff Malcolm Grady to expose the truth before Tobias Wren and the council can turn the boy’s fear into consent. But Hallowell’s horror is no simple demon. It is a starving intelligence shaped by broken land pacts, murdered children, erased records, and generations of civic cowardice.

To stop it, the town must do what it has never done cleanly: name the dead in public, restore the erased, and refuse the lie that a child was ever required.
