In Utah’s Escalante backcountry, the rule is posted in plain black letters: leave the wood where it lies. No collecting. No exceptions. People still pocket pieces of petrified time, and then mail them back with shaking apologies, because something follows them home.

Field conservationist Ava Rios comes to Escalante expecting the usual enforcement work: illegal digs, damaged habitat, careless tourists. What she finds is a deeper disturbance, a deliberate excavation aimed at something hidden beneath the petrified forest, and a place that behaves less like wilderness and more like a sealed mechanism.
